As a writer for the University Daily Kansan, I covered stories that highlighted the people, events, and conversations shaping the University of Kansas community. Reporting challenged me to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and transform interviews and research into stories that were accurate, engaging, and relevant to readers. Working in a newsroom also strengthened my ability to write under deadlines while maintaining journalistic integrity. The University Daily Kansan provides students with hands-on newsroom experience, preparing them to tell impactful stories for the KU community
My Creative Process
Every story began with curiosity. Before conducting interviews, I researched the topic to develop questions and better understand the subject matter. During interviews, I focused on creating a comfortable conversation that encouraged people to share their experiences and perspectives naturally.
After gathering information, I organized my notes, identified the strongest themes, and wrote stories that balanced the facts I got with compelling storytelling. Throughout the writing process, I prioritized accuracy, clarity, and giving each source an authentic voice while creating articles that would resonate with readers.
